The Assumptions You Make About Your Slow PC (and Why They're Probably Wrong)

The Assumptions You Make About Your Slow PC (and Why They're Probably Wrong):

Excerpt from LifeHacker.com

"Exceptions: While a good, lightweight antivirus program will protect you from malware, it won't protect you from the much more common crapware, which is another beast entirely. Crapware isn't malicious by nature. Instead, it's software that you don't want but were probably tricked into installing, and it can slow down your computer. We'll talk a bit more about this in the last section, but for now, take a look in the Control Panel under Add/Remove Programs—if you see programs you don't recognize and aren't from trusted developers like Microsoft, it's probably something you don't want on your machine."

Why antivirus programs have become the problem, not the solution - TechRepublic

Why antivirus programs have become the problem, not the solution - TechRepublic:

"This week, Tavis Ormandy of Google's Project Zero security research team disclosed a major vulnerability in security products by Symantec (and their consumer-targeted Norton brand) which arguably make users of these products less secure than they would be without an antivirus program at all.

This vulnerability is particularly bad—exploiting the vulnerability requires no user interaction. The vulnerability exists in a default configuration, and code execution occurs at the highest privilege level, if not the kernel itself. According to Ormandy, open source libraries used in the products such as libmspack and unrarsrc had not been updated "in at least 7 years."

"

Wow! Something I have become interested to research: Do either the Free or Paid antivirus programs cause more problems than they solve? This article is from TechRepublic.com and a link to the June 30th article is the underlined title. The title is a clickable link, the original title and date is included below!

Staggeringly poor programming and security practices have made antivirus programs a gaping security hole in millions of computers.

The best free antivirus 2016 | TechRadar

The best free antivirus 2016 | TechRadar:

er: something that isn't in your face every two seconds and doesn't slow your PC to a halt just by existing."

"Avira Free Antivirus took the top spot on our previous free antivirus roundup, and here it is again. Yes, AV-TEST's results show it to have a micron less protection than the likes of AVG, but it's the slickest, cleanest and least system intensive antivirus package going. It's almost as if the programmers sat down to determine exactly what users would want out of an antivirus package and somehow..."

AVG AntiVirus Free (2016) Review

AVG AntiVirus Free (2016) Review:

"Effective Malware Blocking
AVG put on a good show in my hands-on malware-blocking test. When I opened the folder containing my malware samples, it leapt in to the fray, knocking out one sample after another. Within a few minutes, 86 percent of the samples were gone.

I launched the remaining samples and analyzed how well AVG detected and blocked them. It detected 89 percent of the samples and scored 8.8 of 10 possible points, Panda Free Antivirus (2016)Free at Panda Security also scored 89 percent and 8.8 points, as did Kaspersky, McAfee AntiVirus Plus (2016)$24.99 at McAfee, and a few others."

Above is an excerpt from PC Magazine which came up on a search for the best FREE antivirus software.

SANCloud9-Social Advertising Network On Cloud 9:

"What is Your Myers Briggs Social Media Type? [INFOGRAPHIC]: "It is an assessment based on Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types that looks at what kind of characters people have and is broken down into four categories: extraversion or introversion, sensing or intuition, thinking or feeling, and judging or perceiving. These assessments are extremely accurate if taken properly and essential to group constructions for projects and group dynamics.""

Serious Business: Windows 7 optimization tips for use with an older computer

Serious Business: Windows 7 optimization tips for use with an older computer: "So I continued using XP until 3 months ago I decided my notebook was way too slow newer software and games and buying a new one is  the only way to speed things up. I started looking for a new notebook, and in the mean time I decided to try out Windows 7, although I was pretty sceptical because of my Vista experience. After installing it, I quickly changed my mind, because Windows 7 was running so good, even with its default settings it was faster than my "optimized" XP. After a little tweaking, I managed to get a really low resource consumption - for normal use it was using no more than 450 MB of RAM. Having in mind that I had only 1 GB of RAM, of which around 600+MB had been used from XP at the time I had it installed, I considered it to be a really nice improvement. "

Amazon made the Echo Dot a $50 smart home steal

Amazon made the Echo Dot a $50 smart home steal: "That's right. You can dim your kitchen lights if you're feeling dramatic, set your bedroom temperature to a balmy 70 degrees, switch on your sprinkler system to keep those pesky kids off your lawn, and more with Amazon's digital assistant. The best bundle, in our opinion, is the Echo Dot and ecobee3 Smart Thermostat. The thermostat, as a standalone product, retails at $249, so you'd be getting a free Echo Dot in this particular package."

Tips for Landing Your Own Newspaper Column | WritersDigest.com

Tips for Landing Your Own Newspaper Column | WritersDigest.com: "Personal columns run in the lifestyle section, or occasionally sneak into the metro pages. Anything from quirky human relationships to local pollution issues is grist for the personal columnist’s mill. These columns rely heavily on the unique voice and adventures of the writer. (See “Ever So Humble” for more on writing a personal column.)

When choosing your own topics for any type of column, aim for universal appeal but anchor your wisdom with precise detail. I’ve learned that I can’t please everyone, of course, but while I’m proofreading my columns, I always ask myself: Is this information helpful or useful? Is this something my readers can relate to?"

Make QR codes cool again with this quirky tool

Make QR codes cool again with this quirky tool:

I could not read this page, which I cut an excerpt from and pasted below:

You generate a custom QR code much the same way as a regular one, but there are a couple of additional steps. Simply head over to this website, input the target URL, upload the image you want to embed (JPEG, PNG, BMP, GIF or SVG), then decide whether you’d like to inject it with color.

It seemed like something I would be interested in "QR code" but the page was so littered with pops ups (which experience has taught me "not to touch" unless an "x" is clearly visible in the upper right corner to close the box.
